My mother told me it would all be okay,
but I’m inclined to believe that
things were simpler in her
womb, in the dark about the blights
illuminating mysteries
perhaps best left out of the spotlight.
A warm shield from injustice
with the first breath of my origin story,
Mom carefully pulled back the veil
through childhood, slowly acclimating my eyes
to a world waiting to blind me
with harsh truths and cold, naked reality.
Perhaps I’m okay. I don’t know another way
and I’m inclined to believe that
things – though complex – deserve
the light, and I can see clearly
because her hand held the flashlight.

Phillip this is so touching, original and beautiful. I can tell you it brought tears to my eyes just now reading it as a mother. What an awesome compliment to your mother. “Holding the Flashlight” trust me wherever she is she is smiling and loving her grateful son. Thank you for touching my heart this morning. Love Joni

Things become more and more, complicated as we grow older, because, we can no longer return, back to those innocent days of our own, childhood, and it becomes, harder and harder, as we all, try, holding on, to that hope that is, reduced, little by little, as we grow up, and older…
