What do we say in the twilight
of a republic? Roman walls fell
into darkness as emperors fiddled
with extravagance, confident
eternity comes to those who wait.
We are a nation doomed
to repeat mistakes of dead
immortals — blinded by hindsight,
history befalls us.

“Emperors fiddled
with extravagance.” Love the play on words there. Nice poem!

These times are certainly reminiscent of the fall of Rome…not that I was there to witness it, lol

Sigh. Well timed. Well done. May we find purchase in sanity and turn back some of this disaster-in-the-making and the naked emperor.
