Tomorrow unwinds itself
on the tomato vine, redder
than yesterday but still
not as juicy if I could just
wait another day.
Patience tastes sour
on my tongue —lemon juice
forcing a pucker on my lips —
and while the days
pile up like fruit in a fruit bowl
I still turn to you to replace
my sour face
with something sweeter,
strawberry juice
on the corner of my mouth.

Mish hosts at dVerse today and invites us to think outside of the fruit bowl.
Each verse punchy and perfectly formed like the fruit – those last lines brings the whole together in one loving fruit cup. Brilliant!
“strawberry juice
on the corner of my mouth.”

Patience tastes sour… loved that, and I can understand that when you wait for that sweet strawberry juice.

Excellent Phillip, well written. The hidden irony is that strawberries too can certainly make one pucker, even be bitter if not picked in the right window of ripeness.

Wonderful write Philip! The sourness of patience can well be sweetened with the sourness of strawberries. Just goes to show yearnings out of season can be expensive!

Phillip,
I’d never thought of this in this way, but now I feel like puckering my lips! I don’t think this idea will ever leave me 🙂
