I stare at my notebook,
uncertain I possess
the words —

How can I adequately
describe how
my stomach leaps
when I make her smile,
one just for me?

Like a lonely puppy
springing
from the floor
as that door opens

— finally —

making the carpet
a trampoline
is evidence of
love that won’t be
deferred.

Did I jump high enough?
Chose the right words
to leap off the page
and justify —

no.

Turns out I never
have to prove my love.
It’s written on her face
unconditionally.
